I keep making changes, and hopefully those sometimes small changes in themselves will one day present themselves as not merely monumental to my practice but revoltionary and of significance. i think as an artist that is what we all strive to become, someone of significance, to leave one's mark on the world or leave a legacy in the short time we have-now i'm sounding a little dramatice- i don't try to be dramatic, i try to be sensible i think-nah.

Well apart from burning down the institute! breaking a few laws, seling my soul to satan and generally causing a nuisance in the art world-i'm joking!-or am i? i've actually had a bit of an epiphany. I think my work has become 'art about the making of art' and becomes something quite new and raw to me and actually very exciting.

the story sort of starts last week where i thought it would be a brilliant idea to film my reactions to crit group where a panel of students etc threw questions about my practice at me, what was supposed to be an assessment became a performance (which was later edited to create a one-sided dialogue-which is quite interesting)- it was the result of extensive self-censorship due to legalities which i felt would compromise the message of 'liberal' and freeness of art practice. cool or what? part 2 is coming where i recite the story of part 1 and should become a sort of not play? but GAME. art game, ehehehehe. but also one that is well substantiated and natural progression of myself as an artist, thanks

I am currently tackling the issue of my practice within the context of the institute, I am debasing conservatism in art whilst exploring pop-culture and yBa’s and the maladies they represent. . How I relate to my own work sometimes in destructive and revolutionary phases (Not unlike ‘Cristina Lucas’’ ‘Habla, seen at Frieze Art Fair, London, where she spend 7 minutes destroying a statue which could represent the monumental, I also find further references of conservatism and ‘breaking down’ of ideologies). I am also interested in facilitating the dissemination of my own work, which provides its own means of exploration. Creative Commons License is important to note, ideally it serves the purpose of disseminating information. My website and community (leftists only) ‘Disseminate to Exist’, reflects the idea that contributing to the act of dissemination proves existence in the 21st century.

I am also involved in exploring broadcasting/ communicative mediums outside the institute. I am currently working on contributory, un-edited videos and performances. I think the way in which my art is ‘seen’ is important for the context of the work.

Alongside these spontaneous works I will be looking into the idea of more scripted and narrative pieces, like, ‘Nobody Dies’ by Mr (etc), which was not unlike a short motion picture. The purpose of the narrative described is somewhat obscure but is an avenue that I have not yet explored, where I have been focused on imitating the form and dynamics of music videos.

I think it would be interesting to write and have actors perform a series of ‘B’ movies, all puns are always intended (the discourses these may present would be interesting to test, its exploring the fine line between movies and art videos), and I think this is something that Mr touches upon.

Entry:0

Hi there and welcome to my log.

This log will be updated every Sunday/Monday and is part of my work as a practising artist and degree student. Here I will update you on the progress of my work and other endeavours, on a more personal and less formal basis.

It is also another way of promoting my own dissemination through the internet and into people's lives.

First log will be uploaded tomorrow, and this will explain a little bit more in depth about what I do as an artist.

Best Regards
Burgette Matthews.
